Honestly PBP had one of the best openings of a match. it was just a straight up guns out and grenade throwing firefight from a mid distance. It was frustrating sometimes but also really exhilarating. MGO1 started with really clever map design, its a shame how quickly it died because of konami.
Also see; Biohazard Outbreak. Japanese devs are really bad at multiplayer. Is there one GOOD Japanese PVP that doesn’t have a bunch of issues and shit? I can’t think of one.
PBP! I think Ghost Factory and Mountain Top we’re two levels I never really played all that much, I forget, were they playable in all modes? It’s been so damn long.
Totally different kettle of fish but: Soulsborne titles (Dark Souls etc.), they’re some of the most popular and played 1v1 PVP multiplayer modes around for games which are predominantly single player focused, and they are so fucking fun.
mountain top was very cool but it was a rare one in the rotation. Hardly anyone ever put it on their servers. Low visibility but thats what made it cool. I don’t really think of ghost factory ever though.
Souls games PvP is fucking amazing, but to be fair they suffer from a lot of ridiculous netcode and matching issues that they really shouldn’t. For some reason Japanese studios are just weird about online play. I mean look at smash bros. The online is horrendous and there’s really no reason for it to be
That’s what I’m saying, there is always some issue like this. Is multiplayer gaming not as big as it is in the west? Maybe it’s just something they don’t prioritize.
I wonder how big online gaming really is in japan. I know coop stuff is pretty popular, maybe they just don’t care for competitive games in general? Every now and then I’ll see a Japanese guy on COD but I really can’t name you any japanese made onlines vs games that has been supported well. I wonder what was the height of online players for any of the MGOs
I don’t know much about online competitive games in Japan, so I can’t say how much MGO was popular there. But I’m sure that they loooooooooove MMO RPGs and those waifu gacha games.
The Japanese play fighting games competitively in arcades, which are too intimate to be played online no matter how good the connection and netcode is. Mainly it’s just the dogmatic and inflexible nature of Japanese business, they do things the way they have always been done, and generally don’t engage with their customers at all.
Was explaining every boss battle’s unique mechanics in this game to Jason yesterday and it reminded me just how GOATed it really is. I started a replay on the 3DS since I haven’t played that version before, think I’ll slowly but surely carry it on.
Anyone know if throwing a snake at a guard, who then dies of poison, counts as a kill?
@ippikitakoNo it won’t count. The snake did it, not you The only things that count as kills in that game is if you use a lethal weapon and that DIRECTLY causes the enemy’s HP to hit 0.
Things like these don’t count:
- Exploding barrels (this also works in MGS4 and makes the bike section with Big Mama a lot easier)
- Throwing people in the water
- As you mentioned, throwing poisonous animals or tricking the guards into eating one
- Bumping them into electrical fences
You can also beat Ocelot and the 1st battle against Volgin lethaly and it won’t count as a kill.
Okay great. Thanks!
I’m doing a 0-kill / markhor / kerotan run in one play to get those trophies. I usually don’t trophy hunt, but want to 100% the games that are “worthy”.
Edit
Got 1 kill in the end and have no idea where… And forgot to capture a Tsuchinoko before getting to the waterfall (doesn’t spawn there if you didn’t get one before). Feel like a complete noob, lol.
Frustrating because it took me long enough to do the kerotans while trying not to kill during the chases, and watch certain cutscenes for the Snake Eye trophy. At least I got those two out of the way.
Ohh yeah I forgot the japanese folks are all about the cute girl stuff, Hell MGO1 had two forced in lol. Coop is biug there too. Like you guys say, must jsut be a culture thing. You guys remember back when the ps3 came out games had to accommodate to JPN players who refused to use the right stick, lol.
Anybody play this lately? How’s it holding up to modern sensibilities?
I’ve had a thorn in my mind for a minute, debating on which MGS I should replay next and I think it’s going to be Snake Eater. Despite being my favorite title from the series, I don’t think I’ve replayed it in over a decade.
Are you going for the hd version or the ps2? If you have the possibility the hd collection runs even better on the newer xbox systems.
As a game MGS3 is really good even to this day. The pacing and story can be a bit jarring at times though. I recommend trying some of the harder difficulties to make it more challenging.
I had some issues playing MGS3 HD on the ps3 since the dualshock 3 controller feels really uncomfortable. Otherwise returning to MGS3 is a blast.
I should really track down an HD Collection, but probably just going to hook up the PS2. Don’t have any XBOX’s, unfortunately.
I think I’m just gonna wing it on easy or very easy, my biggest challenge here is going to be budgeting time to actually sit down and play it. If it proves too easy after all these years I’ll bump it up.
Ever hear of anyone playing it on a emulator? Wonder how it runs.
EDIT: Might actually play it on PC with a PS3 emulator
If you have a beefy computer you can get it to run well on emulation. Controller pressure sensitivity was the only issue there was with emulation but maybe there is some fix for that.
I recently re-played MGS2 and MGS3, but the HD versions. Just to get the platinum trophies. I wouldn’t mind playing them again on PS2 though. Still love those games.
I might do them again on an easy setting, just to play more relaxed and watch all the cutscenes properly. Not in the next few months though. Extreme and VR missions in MGS2 ruined it a bit for me, so need to forget about that first. LOL
Have a decent backlog of PS3 and PS4 games anyway.
Depends on how much that matters to you I guess. I don’t care about the aged graphics or framerate, 4K, loading times and all that stuff.
The aesthetic and graphics are a big part of the allure for me. I still think even MGS1 holds up phenomenally well in comparison to it’s contemporaries, let alone MGS2/3. As for other metrics, sometimes I long for the negative space between stages and cutscenes. It gave you time to process what was happening, a moment to breathe, collect ourselves before pressing on. Today it’s too easy to endlessly play, you can really loose track of time.
In some ways the limitations of these older titles ground us in a way modern games can’t, so I try to welcome them. Seems like most people have a rough time letting go of modern amenities. Their loss.
Hm, perhaps not beefy enough. PS2 it is then!!
