Hello everyone. My name is Confused Koala. I’ve been a fan of the Metal Gear franchise since 2004.
My initial memory was that of my older cousin playing, of what I now know today as, MGS2. The opening Tanker scene, with it’s eerie atmosphere, powerful score, and blood gripped me as a child. Being the good boy I was, however, I stayed away from the game. It’s rather funny looking back at how much that Bold “M” rating on the box pissed me off. I knew I had to play it.
Fast forward a few years and I got my hands on a Play station 3. I remember my Mom’s bewilderment at me wanting to buy a PS1 game off the PS Store. MGS1. From there everything snowballed.
MGS1 was jank heaven but chock full of charisma.
MGS2 was… a game.
MGS3 didn’t really feel like Metal Gear but was undeniably fun.
MGS4 was soul-crushingly boring but the peak of the franchise gameplay-wise so…mixed bag.
MGSV was the first time I ever returned a game I preordered. Yeah.
Now, that rather spotty W-L record I have for the series aside, MGS holds a very special place in my heart and this board is the first I’ve come across that neither treats the series as the second coming of video game christ nor the beligerent drunk uncle who can’t stop talking about 80’s action movies a lot of haters seem to think it is.
I’m just happy to be here and thank you for having me.
Well it’s kind of hard to nutshell my feelings about TPP but in the simplest terms I was just thoroughly dissapointed in the game following up from GZ, which itself left a very sour taste in my mouth.
The Gameplay had evolved to a point where it lost much of MGS’ identity.
The plot was simultaneuosly more boring and convoluted than MGS4 and more pretentious than MGS2 but lacked all of the cool factor that lets those games get away with it.
The worst antagonist since Hot Coldman.
Utterly baffling game design choices (there’s a lot so I have to settle for a bullet point)
THAT plot twist. You know the one.
There’s more but I’d be wasting text without going on an absolute diatribe. MGSV was just a tremendous letdown. I’d try to convince myself that the pros outweighed the cons, but deep in my genes and memes I knew that wasn’t true.
Thanks for having me Dog. I mean on the one hand it’s very transparent what Konami is trying to do here in order to gain back some godd faith with the fans. And it looks… not terrible(?) but then again, you’re remaking MGS3 above all in the series possibly the LOWEST in the tier list for needing a remake.
On the other hand, Konami is just frustrating. I understand that Kojima is the “father” of Metal Gear and that he never technically owned the series and I do think the series can survive without him. But if your first steps are:
Zombie game.
Re-RE Package old games in yet ANOTHER collection at FULL PRICE!!!
Remake an actual GOOD game you had nothing to do with.
It ain’t looking good chief.
Like, just off the top of my head here’s an idea that would not only be cheaper but also unique enough to get old time fans interested.
Remake MG and MG2: Solid Snake.
MSX games actually get the multi-million dollar upgrade. Important story moments in the timeline can be experienced by both new fans and old fans who don’t want to deal with an MSX being an MSX game.
And the total scope of both those games combined would be (objectively) less than Delta.
It’s the easiest fucking slam dunk ever.
EDIT: Also, does anyone else think it’s kind of weird that the MSX titles are unironically more accessible than MGS4?
Hhaha! I mean I got nothing against PW per se’, it’s just got nothing really going for it. Whatever problems were solved by PW were also INVENTED by PW. Leading to a net gain of zero. Controls are… ok? Mission system is an absolute travesty and another big reason why I dislike V.
I can’t put enough quotes around the word “story” so I won’t try.
It’s an inferior Monster Hunter product in every aspect and I don’t mean the crossover.
I find Huey to be the most egregious character in the series. Like did he have to have the same model and VA for us to know it’s Otacan’s dad?
Did it even have to be Otacon’s dad? Does everyone have to be related? This isn’t the Star Wars universe with doomsday weapons, secret twins born to tragic a villain who got upset when some annoying woman died.
Deification of The Boss is at its zenith here and is a fundamental reason the story as a whole became unbearable (for me).
Supporting cast is worse than everyone except Emma Emmerich.
First canon game with no piss scenes.
Big disagree there. Couldn’t accommodate crawling. No crawling in a stealth game. No crawling in a stealth where you play as a character called Snake.
Heavens Divide is all I can put in positive column. I kinda like some of the Mech designs even if they don’t logically fit in with how the mechs kind of regressed afterwards.
I agree all of these except for Huey since John is an almost 1:1 of David anyway.
Ok imma be honest I havent’t played PW in like 10 years and I COMPLETELY forgot about no crawling. Yeah that’s unacceptable.
And that really it with PW isn’t it? Everything either doesn’t meet the bare minimum, is too creepy (even by Kojima standards), or just derivitave. Nothing of Substance remains, no pun intended.
Welcome aboard, Confused-Koala! Your intro resonates with me—especially the part about seeing MGS2’s Tanker scene for the first time. That vibe was unforgettable, and it’s funny how the “M” rating could feel like such a barrier back then! It’s great to see another fan who’s got a love-hate relationship with the series. MGSV had that effect on a lot of people, but even with the misses, it’s hard to deny the series’ lasting impact. Look forward to hearing more from you on the boards!
I mean, no not really. Eli and David have their own unique genetic codes thanks to the mitochondrial DNA of Clark’s unnamed (because of course she is) japanese assistant and aren’t exact replicas of John. George was, which is exactly why his rapid aging kicked in much faster and why his corpse was so coveted by Ocelet in the Guns of the Patriots incident.
Either way, it’s just legacy shenanagins. Huey was “The Otacon” of the Big Boss era. Still got cucked by his own son…god Huey was such a loser.
It’s better than Peace Walker in most, but not all aspects. In areas I think PO is better doesn’t necessarily I think those aspects are genuinely good, just they’re still better than PW because the bar is so low. E.g. the cast/characters in Portable Ops is better than PW but that’s two or three good characters vs none.
It’s a mostly good game hindered by the system it’s on that lots of people shit on because their lord and saviour Kojima didn’t have anything to do with it or like it. I’ll do a TED Talk about the two one day.
